UAE Golden Visa: The Complete Guide for International Applicants
The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency programme that allows eligible foreign nationals to live, work, and study in the United Arab Emirates without needing an Emirati national sponsor. Instead of the standard two- or three-year residency visa, Golden Visa holders receive a renewable five-year or ten-year residence permit that they can maintain independently.
This guide explains exactly who qualifies, what the process involves, how much it costs, and what life looks like after approval.
What Is the UAE Golden Visa?
Introduced in 2019 and significantly expanded in 2022, the Golden Visa programme was created to attract and retain skilled professionals, investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and exceptional talent who contribute to the UAE's long-term development goals.
Unlike a standard employment visa, the Golden Visa is tied to you rather than your employer. You can change jobs, start a business, travel freely, and sponsor family members without losing your residency status.
The programme is administered federally by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), with applications processed through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in each emirate.
Who Is Eligible for the UAE Golden Visa?
Eligibility has been broadened considerably since the programme launched. The main qualifying categories are outlined below.
Investors in Public Investments
You may qualify if you hold a public investment — such as investment funds, company shares, or business deposits — valued at a minimum of AED 2 million. Evidence of the investment must be certified by the relevant UAE authority.
Real Estate Investors
Property investors who own one or more properties in the UAE with a combined value of at least AED 2 million are eligible. The property must be fully purchased, not under mortgage — or if mortgaged, the paid portion must meet the threshold. Off-plan properties from approved developers may also qualify in certain cases.
This category is particularly active in Dubai, where the Land Department works closely with the ICP to verify valuations.
Entrepreneurs and Business Owners
Entrepreneurs who own an existing project in the UAE valued at no less than AED 500,000 may apply. Alternatively, those who have received approval from an accredited business incubator in the UAE can also qualify.
First-time entrepreneurs setting up a new business may be eligible if their concept is endorsed by a UAE business incubator or accelerator recognised by the government.
Skilled Professionals
This is one of the most accessible categories for internationally qualified professionals. To qualify, you generally need to:
- Hold a valid employment contract in the UAE
- Work in a specialised field classified as a priority occupation by the UAE government
- Have a minimum monthly salary of AED 30,000
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher relevant to your profession
Priority occupations currently include roles in science, engineering, healthcare, information technology, education, law, finance, and similar knowledge-economy sectors. The classification is reviewed periodically, so it is important to verify your specific field with the ICP or your local GDRFA office.
Outstanding Students and Graduates
High-achieving students are eligible under two sub-categories:
- Current UAE university students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher
- Recent graduates from top-ranked global universities, typically within two years of graduation, with a GPA of 3.75 or above
The university must appear on an approved ranking list. Students at UAE institutions apply through their university; overseas graduates apply directly through the ICP.
Humanitarian Pioneers and Frontline Heroes
The UAE recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions in humanitarian fields. This category includes doctors, healthcare workers, and others who demonstrated outstanding service, particularly during the COVID-19 period. Applications in this category are typically nomination-based.
Researchers and Scientists
Academics and researchers working at UAE universities or research institutions, or those holding patents or recognised scientific contributions, may qualify. Approval is often coordinated through the relevant UAE ministry or academic authority.
Creative and Cultural Professionals
Artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians, and other creative professionals who are recognised by the UAE's Ministry of Culture and Youth may apply under the creative talents category.
