UAE Golden Visa: The Complete Guide for 2025

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency permit that allows eligible foreign nationals to live, work, and study in the United Arab Emirates without needing a UAE-based sponsor. Valid for five or ten years and renewable, it was introduced by the UAE government to attract skilled professionals, investors, entrepreneurs, students, and other exceptional individuals from around the world.

If you are researching whether you qualify, how to apply, what it costs, and what it actually means for your life in the UAE, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE Golden Visa is an official long-term residency scheme introduced under Federal Decree No. 56 of 2018 and expanded significantly in 2022. Unlike a standard UAE residence visa, which typically requires employer sponsorship and must be renewed every two or three years, the Golden Visa is self-sponsored and valid for up to ten years.

It is not citizenship. It does not grant a UAE passport. However, it provides a level of stability and independence that standard UAE residence visas do not offer.

Key benefits include:

  • No employer or local sponsor required
  • Five-year or ten-year renewable residency
  • Ability to sponsor family members including spouse, children (including sons over 18), and household staff
  • Stay outside the UAE for extended periods without the visa expiring
  • Access to UAE banking, business setup, and property ownership as a resident

Who Is Eligible for the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE government has broadened eligibility considerably since 2022. The following categories currently qualify.

Investors in Real Estate

You may qualify if you own property in the UAE with a minimum value of AED 2 million. The property must be fully paid (not mortgaged, or if mortgaged, the paid portion must meet the threshold). Off-plan properties from approved developers can also qualify.

Joint ownership is permitted provided each individual's share meets the AED 2 million minimum.

Investors in Public Funds or Businesses

  • A minimum deposit of AED 2 million in an approved UAE investment fund
  • Ownership of a UAE company with a minimum capital of AED 2 million
  • A combination of qualifying investments totalling AED 2 million

Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs may qualify if they own or co-own a startup registered in the UAE that has been valued at a minimum of AED 500,000, or if they have received approval from an accredited UAE business incubator. Prior entrepreneurial success outside the UAE may also support eligibility in some cases.

Skilled Professionals

This is one of the most accessible Golden Visa categories. You qualify if you hold a valid UAE employment contract in a specialised field and meet the following:

  • Minimum monthly salary of AED 30,000
  • Employment in a field classified by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) as a priority sector

Priority sectors currently include doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, IT specialists, agriculture specialists, and certain other technical and academic fields. MOHRE maintains the official list, which is updated periodically.

Doctors and Healthcare Professionals

Doctors accredited by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) or the relevant emirate health authority may apply separately under the health professional pathway. Specific requirements include valid UAE accreditation and active employment in the healthcare sector.

Scientists and Researchers

Scientists endorsed by the UAE National Foundation for Sciences or holding advanced research positions at accredited UAE institutions may qualify. Applications in this category are typically assessed case by case.

Outstanding Students and Graduates

Students with a minimum grade point average of 3.75 from UAE universities, or equivalent graduates from recognised international universities ranked among the world's top 100, may apply. This category targets recent graduates, typically within two years of graduation.

Secondary school students who achieve a minimum grade of 95% in the UAE national curriculum may also qualify.

Humanitarian and Creative Professionals

Artists, cultural figures, athletes, and individuals recognised for contributions to humanitarian work can apply under creative and humanitarian categories. These are assessed on a discretionary basis.
